Eagle Rare 10 Year is hard enough to find at all. This one is a single barrel selected for The Booze Outlet, carrying our seal and Barrel #020 on the shoulder. When the barrel is gone it is gone, and no other retailer in the country has it.

Eagle Rare is distilled and bottled by the Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky, aged a full ten years and bottled at 90 proof (45% ABV). Buffalo Trace makes the point on the back label better than we could: no other distilled spirit adheres to standards as strict as those established for Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.

Why a barrel pick of an allocated bottle is worth the trouble. The standard Eagle Rare 10 marries many barrels to land on a consistent house profile, and it is excellent at that. A single barrel skips the averaging. Barrel #020 tastes like the specific spot in the rickhouse it spent a decade in. On a bottle that is already allocated and already ten years old, that is about as close to the distillery's raw material as a retailer can get you.

Tasting Notes

• Nose: Sweet and unmistakably oaky, the Eagle Rare signature, with the ten years showing.
• Palate: Full and complex. Vanilla, molasses and toffee over dry oak and a curl of smoke.
• Finish: Long and rich. Buffalo Trace describes it as having the finish of a fine port wine, and that is a fair description.

How to Enjoy

• Neat: at 90 proof with ten years on it, this needs nothing at all.
• Over one large cube: Buffalo Trace explicitly says this whiskey is best served neat or over ice. No apology needed.
• Manhattan or Whiskey Sour: the distillery's own recommendation, and it holds up.
• Beside standard Eagle Rare 10: the clearest possible demonstration of what a single barrel does to a whiskey you already know.
