The Heaven of Bavaria

Hacker-Pschorr traces to 1417, which makes it older than almost anything else in your fridge. Its Oktoberfest tent, the Hacker Festzelt, is famous for a painted ceiling of blue sky and clouds and is nicknamed Himmel der Bayern, the heaven of Bavaria.

The beer is a classic Munich Marzen: amber, malt driven, and smoother than its color suggests. Toasted and caramel malts give it depth, while noble hops keep it from turning sweet. The two 12 pack configuration is the easier one to split between a party and the fridge.

Tasting Notes

• Nose: Toasted malt, light caramel, and a whisper of floral hops
• Palate: Medium to full bodied, bready and lightly sweet, with a firm hop backbone
• Finish: Clean, dry, and drinkable, with toasted grain lingering

How to Enjoy

• Serve at 45 to 50 degrees so the malt character comes forward
• Pair with roast pork, sausage, pretzels, or aged alpine cheese
• Pour into a wide mouthed mug to build and hold the head

The Story

The Hacker brewery dates to 1417 and merged with Pschorr in the nineteenth century after Joseph Pschorr married into the family and bought it. The combined brewery is one of the six permitted to serve at Oktoberfest under Munich city rules. All of its beer is brewed to the Reinheitsgebot purity law of 1516.
